Demographics

Steeped in equestrian tradition, and surrounded by wineries and vineyards, today Fauquier County is known for being at the heart of hunt and wine country. Famous for its horse farms and beautiful rolling land at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Fauquier offers contrast as both a natural haven and gateway to bustling Northern Virginia and the D.C. Metropolitan Area

Quaint historic towns and villages, museums, beautiful rolling hills at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, private bed and breakfasts, spas, quiet country inns, sixteen area wineries and vineyards, traditional and boutique farm tours, and many outdoor activities including trails and bicycling, hiking and horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, and unique shops and restaurants.

On the fringe of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, Fauquier has managed to maintain its small-town feel and pristine countryside, with a sophistication influenced by its location.

LOCATION DESCRIPTION
A unique county, Fauquier is located in north-central Virginia, only 40 miles from Washington, D.C.; 95 miles northwest of Richmond; and 188 miles northwest of Norfolk.

Fauquier County consists of 651 square miles, is bounded to the west by Culpeper and Rappahannock counties, to the south by Stafford County, to the north by Loudoun, Warren, and Clarke counties, and to the east by Prince William County.

Fauquier County is part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), and Interstate 66 provides a direct link to the nearby Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Accessibility - Efficient road access in all directions, including Interstate 66 and U.S. highways 15, 17, 29 and 211, which provide the opportunity for a "reverse commute."

Workforce - The County is located in Northern Virginia, providing access to one of the most highly educated and largest workforces in the nation. In addition, 62.7% of the County's population alone is between the ages of 18-64.

Business Support - The business environment within Fauquier County has seen a drastic change within the past few years. A primary goal of the County and its supporting government agencies is attracting new businesses, and providing support to existing businesses.

Lower Cost of Living - In 2000, the U.S. Census reflected an increase of over 13% in the County's population from 1990. This percentage has only increased with the recent boom in residential development within the county. The majority of new residents within the County are former residents of the Washington, D.C. suburbs who have moved to Fauquier to enjoy the lower cost of living offered here.
